“When the world gets too noisy and ugly, I watch and draw birds.” — Amy Tan
“Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” — Wassily Kandinsky

Welcome to Dogwood Mixed Media. My work is inspired by nature and color, often from my own backyard. Other favorite spots include the Flint Hills of Kansas where I live and the bayous of South Louisiana where I grew up. I’m drawn to nature’s diverse patterns and colors, particularly in birds and flowers, which give me an excuse to slow down and observe, offering a respite from the busyness of life. Basing a work on one of my photographs feels like I’m bringing the image to life. Working with my hands using paper, ink, pencil, paint, and, at times, other media is a meditation of thanksgiving.
I also enjoy creating portraits, adding pieces of the subject’s writings and other symbolic elements into the work. I began exploring mixed media when making whimsical clocks and have been called the “Clock Lady.”
